Hearing Aids

Hearing aids are medical devices that are equipped with the technology to absorb, amplify, and process sound. This provides the ears and brain with significant support, alleviating hearing loss symptoms and maximizing hearing capacity. Hearing aids help people hear and understand both speech and sound with greater ease as well as clarity. These electronic devices are incredibly useful and important investments in overall health.

How Do Hearing Aids Work?

All hearing aids consist of the same main components:

In addition to these parts, hearing aids have their power source which is either disposable or rechargeable batteries. Though all hearing aids share these components, there is a wide range of hearing aid styles that can drastically differ.

Hearing Aid Styles

There are numerous hearing aid styles. The device that works best for an individual depends on a few factors including the degree of hearing loss, specific hearing needs, and lifestyle preferences. Common hearing aid styles include:

In-the-ear (ITE)

These types of hearing aids are typically more discreet and are worn in the ear canal. They are custom made by taking a mold of your ear which usually happens during your hearing aid consultation appointment with your hearing healthcare provider. There are different styles of ITE hearing aids including:

  • Invisible in the Canal (IIC)
  • Completely in the Canal (CIC)

Behind-the-ear (BTE)

These devices include a portion that is worn behind or on top of the outer ear. This part of the device is connected - via small tubing - to an earpiece that sits in the ear canal. These types are for more profound degrees of hearing loss. Common BTE style hearing aids include:

  • Receiver in the Ear (RITE)
  • Mini Behind the Ear (Mini BTE)
